European values in doubt

While reasonable arguments can be made about the economic impact of a British exit from the EU, Bronwen Maddox’s claim (“In: the case for Europe,” June) that the UK should vote to remain because the “EU stands for western values of liberal democracy” rests on shakier ground.

When it comes to the values prioritised by those in Brussels, respect for the outcome of the democratic process is way down the list. Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, a man still committed to a pan-European project despite all that his country has endured, was once astonished to be told by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble that “Elections cannot be allowed to change an economic programme of a member state.”
