London calling?
Like most capital cities, pay was always somewhat higher in London than for the rest of the country, but over the last 40 years that gap has grown hugely. Londoners earned around 15 per cent more than workers in the rest of Great Britain at the end of the 1970s, but that gap had trebled to 45 per cent on the eve of the financial crisis.
