Go with the flow

‘Psychologies’ Editor-in-Chief Suzy Greaves goes canoeing at dawn with her teenage son, Charlie.

A HERON ROSE through the mist as we paddled down the river in our canoe. We glided on the still water, joined by two white swans who escorted us and preened beside our boat. It was as if we were being given a royal audience with the king and queen of the river. ‘This is amazing, Mum’, said my 14-year-old son, Charlie.

It was quite a departure from his eye-rolling response when I told him we were going to embark on a Spring Challenge together and go canoeing at dawn, near Canterbury in Kent. In fact, the eye-rolling had morphed into full-on Kevin-the-Teenager mode when I woke him at 6.30am for our boating experience. We had headed down to Canterbury the night before to stay in the riverside, wooden-floored Grove Ferry Inn with Patrick, the charming landlord who looked after us, showed us the pet pigs in the garden and built us a roaring fire. After toasting ourselves beside it, and eating a hearty dinner, we retired to our cosy room above the bar in readiness for our early start.

About Psychologies

We encourage you to fall in love with life, to get out of your head and into nature. Spring is officially here and we’re encouraging you to try a ‘micro-adventure’ –  a 24-hour foray outside into the fresh air whether it’s walking in the hills, or sleeping under the stars. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and fed up of slaving to support a lifestyle that doesn’t make you happy, then read how decluttering and minimalism can help you start creating a life based on values, not things in our  dossier. Join our month-long Psychologies Decluttering Challenge with expert Cait Flanders, author of The Year Of Less, who will coach us on how to simplify our lives.
