I’m writing this the day before the Billing Fun
Run, and that got me wondering which events
on the calendar appeal to me most, but the more
I think about it the more I change my mind.
Amazingly, Billing will be the seventh event I’ve attended
so far this year, and the only thing I haven’t yet had a fix of is
drag racing, but that will be put right in the near future.
I know it’s not everyone’s ideal venue, but I for one really like
Billing. After all, the weekend is now somewhat of a tradition, and
I’ve only missed it once in the last 25 years or so. But in saying that,
is it actually my favourite event of the year? The simple answer is,
I don’t know. I do enjoy static shows, especially if there’s a good
cruise out on the Saturday, but then again I enjoy the drags as well,
and you can’t beat the buzz of a good swap meet. I’m not really into
the lifestyle thing that much, but I can relate to those who are.
I suppose what I’m really trying to say is that I enjoy a fairly
broad spectrum of events. The key elements for me are having a
chilled weekend with good company and a good selection of cars
to look at. Oh, and a dose of sunshine doesn’t go amiss either.
The good thing is that the seemingly ever expanding events
calendar has a comprehensive mix catering for all tastes, and
whatever it takes to float your boat can be found somewhere
in that list, no matter how specific your criteria for enjoyment
may be. And talking of enjoyment criteria, the thing I don’t get
is when people slag off an event as it wasn’t to their liking –
especially if they weren’t even there! Most events are pretty
self-explanatory and if you don’t like the sound of them then
don’t go, but please don’t deride the event on one of the hot
rod forums simply because it wasn’t your cup of tea. Select your
weekends wisely and enjoy yourself wherever you may end up.
