Men’s Sheds: Man Caves
By Jennifer Harper
TWENTY years ago a movement was founded in Australia that took the country by storm – Men’s Sheds. Initially launched as a community-based venture to improve the mental and physical health of men in retirement years, there are now almost 1,000 ‘sheds’ throughout Australia. Here, in Scotland, the idea is being embraced and developed as a venture for men of all age groups to improve social contact and add purpose to their lives.
Men’s Sheds have been proven to build men’s confidence, self-esteem and renew interests, as well as introduce them to new skills. It is all about creating foundations of friendship, and building trust, while sharing and learning.
So what is a Men’s Shed, and what do ‘shedders’ do? In simple terms, a Men’s Shed is a friendly meeting venue for men who want to share skills, learn, take part in community projects and enjoy some male banter. Shedders can take part in many projects, from joinery and wood-turning, to cooking, gardening, restoration projects and even repairing bikes for local children.
