THE ART OF OPTIMISM
To illustrate an issue on optimism, artist Nelson Makamo thought a portrait of a child would be a natural choice. Adults forget there’s “beauty in being a human being,” while “children are just discovering that,” as he puts it. When Addis Ababa–based photographer Muluneh was commissioned for TIME’s Optimists issue, she turned to Ethiopia’s political climate for inspiration.
There, a new Prime Minister is bringing in reforms, including championing
women in government. In this image, a woman is being pulled in different
directions but has keys near her heart. “Sometimes we forget we hold the keys to unlock things,” Muluneh says.” Moving forward with truth and love is what
optimism is.”
