Raising an activist – one book at a time

For kids looking to make a difference and effect change, the necessary skills and support are as close as the nearest bookshelf

YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS to more information than ever before. A few taps on a touchscreen can yield a video of a Hong Kong protest, a Trump rally livestream, or a politician posing in Blackface. With this increased awareness of current affairs, it makes sense that young people want to improve the world they’ve been born into.

A handful of passionate and brave teens – including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, Canada’s Autumn Peltier, and the U.S.’s Parkland high school students – have drawn worldwide atten- tion to their causes. And they’re inspiring future activists: look no further than the three-millionplus YouTube views of Thunberg’s speech at 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York or the hundreds of thousands of young people across the world who have taken part in climate-change protests.
