If a tree cries, does anybody hear?

A sweet picture book explores the Halifax Explosion from the point of view of an empathetic sapling

PICTURE BOOK

The Little Tree by the Sea: From Halifax to Boston With Love

John DeMont and Belle DeMont, ill.

MacIntyre Purcell Publishing, Ages 6–8

THE MAIN CHARACTER in this pitch-perfect book about the 1917 Halifax Explosion – by fatherdaughter team John and Belle DeMont – is a little tree perched high on the hill. Seeing two boats about to collide in the city’s harbour, the tree tries to warn citizens as they go about their day below. It’s to no avail. As in the worst nightmares, the little tree finds itself, quite literally, rooted in place, branches immobile and voice mute as the catastrophe unfolds.
