Preservation heroes
I ENJOYED reading my former colleague Bob Gwynne’s article ‘Rolt and all the rest’ about the personalities behind railway preservation (April issue).
I hope he will not mind my querying his use of the word ‘indifferent’ when describing the Science Museum’s attitude in declining the offer of the Portstewart steam tram locomotive in 1926. At that time the museum had no outlying stores, so full-size objects such as this could only be accepted if they could be displayed in the galleries. The accompanying photograph (below) from 1925 shows that the railway gallery was already full and there was just no room for another locomotive.
