It’s a new season! Hopefully, wherever you are, the sun is shining, trees blossoming and lambs skipping through meadows. OK, we may have an idealised notion of spring, perhaps because after a long winter we’re longing for a new beginning - something lively and hopeful. And that’s exactly what we had in mind when putting together this issue. We’ve chosen ten dining tables that are perfect for bringing together friends and family, to share both a celebration or a simple supper. For our Easter Styling feature Janice Issitt, Tamsyn Morgans and Alice Roberton travelled to the Welsh House in Carmarthanshire, threw open its windows and filled it with flowers, plants and pottery – organic elements that celebrate nature’s bounty. Staying outside, we look at vintage tools and how, through their craftsmanship, not to mention unique beauty, they’re having a renaissance. A lovely old plane or spade was almost certainly used in the restoration of the Botanic Cottage in Edinburgh’s Botanic Garden. Taken apart, brick by brick, and re-assembled in a new location and given a fresh lease of life, the property is both the oldest and the newest building in the garden.
Expert at bringing together old and new is Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. He told us that although he loves the past, the era for him is very much the present – with his own twist, of course. And Red Deer an architect trio who create stunning rough luxe interiors are, too, expert at teasing out a building’s past. And if it’s a concrete shell, they’ll create their own story for it, which then informs the design. Genius. Enjoy this issue, and the change in season!
