Retro Cars August 2012

John Holmes, owner of the ’64 Jaguar on this month’s cover fell in love with E-Types back when he was just a lad in short trousers. Unlike many he played the long game, keeping the dream of owning one alive for decades, and finally realising his wish in his late 40s. After a long restoration, where he threw his own ingredients into the coupe’s rebuild recipe, John was finally able to use it and we’re glad to report the experience didn’t disappoint. In fact it’s quite obvious talking to John that he still loves every second of owning the car. The E-Type isn’t the sort of car you’d traditionally expect to find on the front of Retro Cars, but that’s precisely why we’ve given it the coveted cover spot this month. It may well be aspirational motoring for many of us who are shy of the big bucks required to buy and build our own, but we can all take inspiration from its natural effortless style, and the faultless execution of John’s modifications. A bit of genuine class never hurt anyone…
Elsewhere in the issue we’ve good the usual mix of motors for you. From a Euro-styled Peugeot 205 GTi hot hatch, to an (almost) completely original Fiat 131. A daily driven, and modified, 1970s Toyota Corolla, which sees 1000-miles of Californian highways a week is also a highlight this month. A rotten lowlight Morris Minor turned historic racer, a home brewed Aston Martin V8 and a delicious Mk1 Ford Fiesta are also waiting for you inside. As usual though there’s plenty more to boot…
