Often, when complimenting a lapidary artist or silversmith on their work we receive some form of this response, “Thank you, but it’s not just me, it’s the material I had to work with.”

It’s not exactly surprising to hear artists cite sources of inspiration, equipment, material, and support of others when accepting praise for their creations, but it is always fascinating to learn about the ways and depths material influences and sometimes drives their process of creativity.

In the course of inquiring of lapidary artists and silversmiths about the pieces featured here, we learned about the power of letting the material lead, seeing beyond what is readily visible by inspecting the clues offered by stones, observing the artistry and techniques of others, and enjoying the process.
