A gluten-free alternative to couscous, quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a nutritional powerhouse of energy and minerals

everyday superfood

Despite being considered a wholegrain, quinoa is in fact a seed belonging to the same leafy plant family as its smallergrained cousin, amaranth.

Unlike rice and wheat, the quinoa plant is not a grass, but is rather a leafy herbaceous plant originating in Southern America, from the Andean Region. The quinoa grain has long been a staple of the native Andean population, and was considered a sacred grain by the Incas. Quinoa has since become popular amongst the health-conscious community. So much so, that a peak in quinoa production saw the United Nations General Assembly name 2013 the ‘Year Of Quinoa’!
