When I was 13, I turned vegetarian for ethical reasons but my eyes were opened to veganism several years later while visiting a long-distance boyfriend in California (yes, this was pretty crazy!). Until that point, I hadn’t considered or been exposed to the suffering involved in both the dairy and egg industries, in addition to the environmental destruction and health implications.

Along with a new-found understanding of the truth behind these farming practices, I discovered that California had incredible vegan options nearly everywhere you went. I was blown away the first time I had scrambled tofu… it looked and tasted just like egg! At that time, veganism in the UK was pretty low-key but it’s since moved forward at an incredible rate with information and food being so accessible, along with fantastic options in restaurants, pubs and supermarkets. Of course, there’s still work to be done but we’re getting there.
