Singletrack Room 101

WORDS BY MARK ALKER & CONTRIBUTORS

Applicant: Hannah

Submission: Crap tools

Argument: Possibly bought in a too-good-to-resist sale, maybe given as a gift by a well-meaning relative who thought the colours looked nice: the cheap tool. Attempted use creates a bounty of swarf, but has little impact on your progress towards bike repair. You throw the tool back in your toolbox (ready for you to use next time) and find a better replacement. The swarf finds its way onto your new inner tube, then through your inner tube, and gives you your next puncture. You get out your tyre levers. One bends. Another snaps, propelling your knuckles into your spokes and removing the flesh, which has only recently regrown from the time your cheap Allen key slipped when you were removing your pedals.
