I took part in ‘the world’s toughest gravel race’ in Belgium the other week. The organisers, it seemed, had found every single off-road track, path, field edge and riverside singletrack in Belgium and linked them all together with the minimum amount of smooth tarmac. Ostensibly, the aim was to ride from the race start, near the French border, up to Flanders to ride some of the classic cobble climbs there, then wend our way down to the French border again, where we’d ‘enjoy’ some of the unevenly spaced cobbles of the Paris Roubaix race, taking place the following day.
