Anning’s discoveries filled prehistoric oceans with gigantic reptiles. Other fossil hunters would soon do the same for dry land, revealing that gigantic reptiles once prowled and stomped on English soil. By astonishing coincidence, Anning’s “almost perfect” plesiosaur skeleton was announced the very same day as the discovery of the first dinosaur!
In 1824, fossil hunter William Buckland revealed a creature he named “Megalosaurus or great Fossil Lizard.” It was an “enormous fossil animal”—a reptile with “a bulk equal to that of an elephant”!
