BACK TO BUXTON
Long held hopes of reviving the Matlock to Buxton main line have received a major boost, twenty five years after Peak Rail quit the Derbyshire spa town. Redevelopment proposals for the Nestlé owned mineral water bottling factory site in Buxton, next to land Peak Rail has retained with the aim of eventually reopening a small station, have been abandoned. A local masterplan is now being formulated that would involve the railway becoming a vital part of the site. A Peak Rail spokesman said: “After more than two decades of absence from Buxton, this will finally enable Peak Rail to construct a station suitable to serve a reinstated line between Buxton and Matlock, and is a sign that the importance of heritage railways to the economy of the country is finally being recognised.”
