And right here we’d like to thank Will “M.C. Dälek” Brooks for assuming the position of rationaliser as to why hip-hop is being featured in the pages of your favourite extreme music journal. Long-time readers might be well aware of the existence of this New Jersey-based experimental/ noise hip-hop outfit, as they’ve been reviewed in these pages in the past. As such, you’ve hopefully also noticed, and are somewhat pleased (if not tickled), to note that our justification for the inclusion of Dälek once again has been contracted out to the man on the inside. For those of you new to the game, please note that Dälek have been an eardrum-shredding force on the underground hip-hop, experimental and noise rock scenes for almost twenty years with six albums under their belts (including new release ‘Asphalt For Eden’, their first full-length since 2009). They have shared stages with a variety of pillars from both the extreme music and hip-hop worlds and collaborated with the likes of Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin’s Techno Animal, krautrockers Faust, electronic blip-blooper Kid 606, Swiss legends The Young Gods and there are rumours running amok of an upcoming partnership with Blut Aus Nord. Hell, considering all of the above, it’s surprising that Dälek hasn’t butted creative noggins with Mike Patton, though the majority of their discography did see release on Patton’s Ipecac label. And even if all of the above still hasn’t indicated there’s more going on here than a whiny dude lamenting about some girl not calling him on her cell phone, Dälek’s new album is seeing the light of day via Profound Lore, the epitome of cult-cool extreme music labels.

About Terrorizer Magazine

It’s always an interesting proposition to see how a band progresses from working with true, cult indie labels to working with multi-national major labels. How money can transform a pure idea into (potentially) a much bigger entity and consumerbased product; can an idea, a sound, an image transcend into the broader palette without being spoiled from its original form? Or does it really matter at all what label a band is on these days? Do you, the reader and listener, truly care if an artist releases music on an indie or via the corporate bigwig? It is all business, no matter who is controlling the purse strings. Why am I pondering this right now? I guess it’s because our cover stars this month are the mighty Purson. No stranger to these pages, it’s wonderful to see Purson really coming of age on their new album, the major label released ‘Desire’s Magic Theatre’. It’s a great follow-up to their previous, indie released debut and really captures a band who mean business (again). Nothing has changed in that sense regardless of the label behind the band, and frankly, they were always going to end up on a Terrorizer cover because their music rocks and they thoroughly deserve the accolade. We hope you enjoy their latest story as much as we have enjoyed producing it. As always, the rest of this issue has been a joy to create and features some of the best bands in the extreme and underground metal scenes. Never enough pages as I’d like to write about every band myself and the team love, but it’s entirely flash-in-the-pan/fad-free and that’s the main thing, right?! See you next month!
