Night walking

Paul Regan, The Artist Award winner in the 2017 Royal Watercolour Society exhibition, talks to Susie Hodge about his atmospheric night scenes of urban streets

IN CONV E R S AT ION

Tudor Park, oil on board, 21╳241⁄2 in (53╳62cm).

‘This came from a late night walk with my dog, lit by a full moon. Much time was spent moving around the park considering the relationship between all the elements of the composition, such as the moon, the bin and the sign. It was selected for the Threadneedle Prize 2016 and exhibited in London and Florence.’

Founder of Insight School of Art and winner of many prestigious painting awards, Paul Regan says that these days he’s ‘very confident about the value of being an artist, but it’s hard for artists who are just starting out. I’m not interested in following the process of other artists, as what one artist is searching for is usually quite different to another.

Similarly, when I teach, I encourage students to make marks that feel natural to them.’
