Passing Rain Clouds over Honister Pass, the Lake District, Derwent XL Charcoal Blocks, Wallace Seymour Liquid Graphite (lapis blue and graphite), graphite sticks on Canson Moulin du Roy 140lb (300gsm) Not, 22x30in (56x76cm).
For this awe-inspiring location I felt compelled to work big, outdoors with the corners of the paper weighed down with rocks. On this paper any water media used as a glaze sits on top for a long time, which allows for reworking whilst still wet. Diluted and undiluted liquid graphite was used as glazes. Once dry these graphite washes were vigorously drawn over with the graphite blocks and sticks. An eraser was used gently to burnish heavy applications of graphite in desired areas to interpret reflected light
