Create eye-catching compositions

The way to capture attention and stand out in a crowd is to create strong images with visual impact says Jo Quigley, who demonstrates her decisionmaking process from source material to finished composition

Jo Quigley has a degree in Fine Art from Winchester School of Art and a Masters in Applied Fine Art from Kingston University. Jo taught painting before turning professional; she demonstrates to art societies across the south east of England and has been shortlisted for several major prizes, for both her cityscapes and wildlife paintings.

Everyone has different tastes in art. For some people it is colour or texture that appeals, for others it might be the subject matter or a narrative that draws them in. So can artists have any real control over how others might respond to their work? Perhaps not entirely, but how an artist chooses to combine and place visual elements within a space, ie the ‘composition’, can have a surprising effect on how a viewer might engage with a work.
