Stormy Skies, oil on board, 12x16in (30.5x40.5cm). A limited palette of ultramarine, burnt sienna, Naples yellow, chrome yellow and titanium white was used for this painting. Winsor & Newton Oleopasto was used to increase the drying time allowing paint to be applied directly and with greater control of blending and layering within one session
Oil paint has a lovely rich, buttery consistency and you can use direct from the tube. For certain effects, however, that quality sometimes requires changing to achieve the desired result. Mediums give you the ability to do just that, thus enabling greater diversity and range when using oil paint.
Mediums are additives that can be added to oil paint to change a variety of properties. They can be natural or synthetic and can change the viscosity, drying time, gloss and transparency of oil colour.
