The armed forces are the military forces of a country. The British Armed Forces are made up of the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force (RAF).

The emergency services are the organisations — in particular the ambulance, police and fire brigade — that deal with emergencies.

Pushing your mental and physical capacity to the limits, whether you’re protecting, rescuing or defending, your job is to ultimately keep people safe.

Both sectors have many different areas to go into, with jobs not just on the frontline but many behind the scenes.

− ABILITY TO TAKE ORDERS AND FOLLOW REGULATION: This sector is governed by a hierarchy of responsibility. You need to be aware of where you fit in. You will be responsible for following regulation about what you can and can’t do in your job.

− ABILITY TO REMAIN CALM IN STRESSFUL SITUATIONS: You need to think on your feet and remain emotionally resilient.

− ABILITY TO LEAD: You will need to be decisive and confident.

− TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION: Written, verbal and visual conveyance of information is part of day-to-day tasks.
