Your Part-Time Rights

A part-time job is often the route that many students take in order to try to subsidise some of their living costs and to gain extra spending money. So, if this is you, what are your rights? It’s important to know that working part-time doesn’t mean you should be treated less favourably than those who are in full-time employment.

The UK has extensive legal protection for employees of any working pattern. We have drawn together some of the most relevant information from official sources for you.

The National Minimum Wage is currently £5.60 per hour for people aged 18 to 20-years-old. As a part-time employee you must still get the same hourly pay rate as people doing a similar job full-time.

You should get the same treatment as full-time employees for pay rates such as Statutory Sick Pay. You are entitled to SSP if you earn at least £113 a week and are sick for at least four days in a row, which includes days that you don’t work, such as weekends and bank holidays. You will get paid for the days that you would normally work (but this does not include the first three days you are off).

The standard rate is £89.35 a week for up to 28 weeks. It is subject to tax and National Insurance. You must let your employer know as soon as possible that you are ill to ensure you can claim.
