House-Hunting Made Easy

FROM HALLS TO HOUSE, HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

SPONSORED BY: THE STUDENT HOUSING COMPANY

Moving out of student halls and into a student house can seem like an age away when you first move to university, but the hunt for second year accommodation will come round sooner than you think. Here are some points to consider:

PRIVATE LANDLORDS VS. ESTATE AGENTS

Choosing whether to rent accommodation from a private landlord or from an estate agent is never easy as there are plenty of pros and cons for both. If you’re looking to save money, private landlords are the way to go, but this option can be more risky. It’s vital to do your research before agreeing to a tenancy. Your university will have a list of accredited landlords; you can find these all over campus, at your students’ union and online. The easier option is to go through an estate agent, but they do come with added costs. You’ll have to pay an admin fee along with any commission. Each letting agent is different, so shop around before you settle. You can’t be too careful when it comes to renting; carefully read over your tenancy agreement before you sign it, you want to make sure that everything is correct and there’s nothing that might cause problems later on.
