Paddling the Delta

Kevin and Fiona Dowle recount their journey from Maun to Botswana’s Okavango Delta by boat

We are heading to our camp on Chief’s Island in the Okavango Delta. The boat journey from Maun, through channels of blue water glistening in the sunlight, is exhilarating.

Along the banks are numerous groups of elephant. The boat slows for us to view them, before speeding along again. Reed beds shimmer and dance in the breeze. Lily pads float effortlessly on the meniscus, anchored by their single root stem.

The campsite is remote, surrounded by trees and marked by a circle of weathered old skulls. Our arrival is greeted by baboons barking, hippo grunting and an elephant inquisitively wandering in for a closer inspection of its new neighbours. We set up camp and rest, and then it’s time for afternoon tea before some late-afternoon game viewing.
