July-September, Namaqualand, South Africa

Sunset orange, alizarin crimson, rich magenta, pure white, burnt umber and deepest azure. These are just a handful of the colours found in the verdant hills and valleys of Namaqualand in South Africa after the winter rains. Almost 4000 species of plant, some endangered and rare, have lain dormant awaiting the waking call of water and now begin to rise and carpet the area. Driving, hiking or cycling through these vast natural palettes makes for an incredibly enjoyable part of any trip — and for flower enthusiasts, certain species such as snow protea, blue Lachanaea filamentosa and pink Cyanella alba are found nowhere else in the world.
