In 2016, a comprehensive aerial survey of Gorongosa National Park revealed an extraordinary revival in wildlife numbers since their decimation during Mozambique’s 16-year war from 1977 to 1992. A total of 78,627 animals were counted in the survey, representing an increase of around 10 per cent since the last count in 2014. The reserve is even beginning to contribute to the restocking of other protected areas in Mozambique. Gorongosa’s Director of Scientific Services, Marc Stalmans, said: “The recovery of wildlife is progressing well.”
