Lodge of the future

We asked innovative architects Niel Crafford and Arno Pieters of PlanEco to forecast how a camp may be structured in decades to come

Over the past 20 years, safari accommodation has come a long way, but change is set to continue. With this in mind, we at Travel Africa began to ponder what lodges might be like in 20 years’ time and beyond.

In 2037, what impact might technological advances have on their design and construction? Will there be substantial developments in materials? How will camps meet guests’ high standards, while remaining as green as can be? How might they be truly integrated into the environment?

To set the discussions in motion, we posed these questions to Niel Crafford and Arno Pieters of PlanEco, before instructing them to conjure up their ‘lodge of the future’. We gave them free rein to be as whimsical and whacky as they’d like, and the result, we hope you’ll agree, is a futuristic masterpiece.
