What better way to escape a fast-paced lifestyle than heading to the country? When designer Stephen Saint-Onge and his family sought a rustic refuge from New York City, a country home in the called out to them. But their weekend getaway didn’t look like a picture-perfect family home when they first found it. After plenty of renovations, such as opening up the kitchen, adding a welcoming front porch and putting in stone fireplaces, the structure of the home started to inspire its interior.
Before you think about giving up those old retro figurines you enjoyed as a kid, stop and think of the design possibilities.
THE MAKINGS
A sensible mudroom rather than a more formal entryway establishes the feeling that this is a house to kick your feet up in, instead of one to tiptoe around. “It’s all about being relaxed and keeping things simple,” Stephen says. In another effort to redesign the home into a comfortable vacation getaway, Stephen traded in an awkwardly-placed French door in favor of a fieldstone fireplace. He took inspiration from the stone to work gray into the rest of the color scheme. “I wanted the stonework to look like the stones had come from the land outside around the house,” he says. “I wanted it to look like it had always been there.”
