SAFE HAVEN

PREPARE YOUR BUG-OUT SHELTER PLANSBEFOREYOU NEED THEM.
© GETTY IMAGES

When considering the need for shelter after a catastrophic event, it is best to look at the idea of shelter as a place of safety and security, both from the elements and from any other dangers you could be exposed to. Shelter is a safe haven where you can regroup, rest and rejuvenate in preparation for more challenges that might lie ahead.

People are social creatures. We might not all live in huge cities, but most Americans do live in some sort of community environment. Modern humans, Americans in particular, are accustomed to a modern infrastructure with safe buildings, electricity, running water, treated sewage and a whole host of other amenities that are by-products of affluence and technological advancement.

What if the protection your modern shelter provides you were lost or destroyed? Even though many wish to shrug off such thoughts, the fact is that we are closer to this happening today than ever before. In just the last year, severe weather, long-term power outages and wildfires were just a few scenarios that caused many hundreds of thousands of Americans to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Fortunately, the majority of these situations was only temporary.

Two hundred years ago, the ability to find food, water and shelter was almost second nature to Americans. But times have changed so drastically that it is fair to say most Americas no longer possess the basic skills needed to survive without their modern conveniences.
