THE First World War centenary inspired a multitude of dedicated one-off auctions and sale sections, but has fatigue set in? Although some extra consignments have inevitably emerged, Somme centenary sales have been thin on the ground this summer.
Dealers are promoting an interesting selection of honours. Great War Medals have a section on their website titled ‘1916 Somme Casualties’.
Steve and Maggie Law, who run GWM, told ATG that “while there were more British soldiers killed in action (KIA) on July 1, 1916, than on any other date, their medals are highly prized and have always commanded a significant premium over the other First World War casualty dates. We were fortunate to have access to a small collection of KIA 1/7/16 medals and this year’s Somme Centenary has certainly resulted in much interest plus many new orders.”
