THE attribution of an oil sketch to Sir Peter Paul Rubens has pitted experts at Sotheby’s and Christie’s against each other after it hammered for $4.3m in New York last month.
The painting was bought by a UK dealer for €10,000 (£8000) at Christie’s in Amsterdam in June 2015 when it was catalogued as ‘after Sir Anthony Van Dyck’.
