TOPPING Swan & Turner’s (17.5% buyer’s premium) final 800-lot auction in Jedburgh on February 11 was this picture of a cornfield by Scottish landscapist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916).
The signed 23in x 3ft 1in (58 x 94cm) oil on canvas titled Corn Stooks near Loch Carron, sold in a packed saleroom to a private collector for £4400 against a £2000-3000 estimate.
Scenes of cornfields are the Perthshire-born artist’s most sought-after works at auction. In April 2004, Sotheby’s London established a high for the artist when another Loch Carron harvest scene sold at £9000 – a record that stands today.
