A brace of unrecorded pastels by celebrated Scottish Colourist SJ Peploe (1871-1935) sold strongly at Lawrences (22% buyer’s premium) in Crewkerne.
Depicting dancers, they were painted between 1895-1905, during the formative years of Peploe’s career in France, and show the clear influence of Edgar Degas (1834-1917). They had been a gift from the artist to his sister-in-law and had remained with the family ever since.
Picture specialist and department head Richard Kay, said it was unusual to find pastels by Peploe that were “so fully developed on paper”.
