This iconographic gold ring – perhaps once belonging to a bishop or senior member of the clergy in the Yorkshire area – sold for £7100 at Hansons (20% buyer’s premium) in Etwall, Derbyshire.
It is engraved with St George and St Catherine and dates from the late 15th or early 16th century during the period when George began to replace Edmund as the patron saint of England. Many were made in base metal as pilgrim souvenirs, but in gold, these were high-status objects.
