Printed for the Inquisition in Mexico in 1620, this broadside forbids the use of Peyote, a cactus with hallucinogenic properties. It was sold by Swann for $20,000 (£14,085).
Mexican lots, one of them relating to the working of a silver mine in the 16th century, produced some of the higher bids in a recent Americana sale.
Sold at $24,000 (£16,900) in an April 12 auction held by Swann (25/20/12% buyer’s premium) was a somewhat dampstained folio album of around 235 leaves that presented both copies and original documents relating to the work of the silver mining estate of Luis de Castilla.
