A collection of fashion books and plates offered as part of an Exeter sale on September 12 was led at £1050 by an 1831, second edition of John Jackson’s The Improved Tailor’s Aera.
Seen at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood (21% Buyer’s Premium), it includes among its suggestions and instructions 13 ‘correct and practical’ pattern plates that seem right for gaiters. The title-page also makes special mention of ‘Regimentals, Ladies’ Riding Habits and Pelisses’. This work was bound with an 1831 edition of Jackson’s The Tailors’ Directory, illustrated with four plates.
