Future football stars have a fun sporting festival

Young footballers on Arran enjoyed a feast of football at the Arran United Soccer Saturday held at Arran High School fields last weekend, welcoming more than 170 children in the youth tournament.

Making up three groups – fun 4s, super 5s and 7- a-side – the teams competing in the friendly games were, Lochnell, Oban, Tarbert, Caledonia, Irvine Meadow and Arran United.

Arran United fielded two teams in the fun 4s and, despite some challenging weather, they played to a high standard. Both teams had six games each, playing football from noon to 3pm with great support from the parents on the sidelines. The coaching team of Ross Dobson and Fraser Barr ensured that players had a great day.

In the super 5s, Arran United also fielded two teams. This section had the most teams and games ran from 11.50am to 3.30pm.

The Arran teams, boosted by enthusiastic home support, played some exceptional football that would not be out of place in groups more advanced in age. Coach and club secretary Matt Harvey, who had Dave Morrison helping on the day, said: ‘ I am so very proud of all of the players. They gave 100 per cent effort on the day and got their rewards. It was really great to see structured youth football on Arran which has not existed before.’
