VETERAN PROFILE
IT WAS 65 years ago that Tony Bowman ran at the White City for Middlesex Schools and shortly afterwards won silver in the English Schools 100m hurdles. Now, after three world age-group championship titles, the 80-year-old has the accolade of being a world record-holder.
That came in the British Masters Championships at Lee Valley earlier this year where he ran 10.86 to slash 0.24 from the previous mark. However, Bowman was lost to the sport for many years before being tempted back, aged 39, by the first London Marathon in 1981 before beginning a masters athletics career.
