PLENTY of evidence exists to support carbohydrate supplementation, via gels, drinks and other products, during long distance events or endurance sessions. However, very few studies have looked at the effect of carb top-ups during strength and conditioning sessions.
Reporting in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers from the department of kinesiology at Mississippi State University asked a small group of athletes to perform a series of short sprints, full body resistance training exercises, jumping, and shuttle running tests.
During the trials, athletes were given carbohydrate supplements while the researchers measured their performance responses. Results clearly showed that carbs “may provide a beneficial effect to strength and conditioning performance”, the scientists said.
