ORGANISERS have approved a new ranking system to be used as qualification for the European Championships.
European Athletics decided at its council meeting last weekend in Lausanne to use head-to-head results in the continent’s one-day meetings rather than qualification standards.
“This is a revolutionary move for promoting our sport,” said European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen.
“Our aim is to show that every time athletes compete it has a clear meaning and is another step on the road to our championships.”
Full details are yet to be finalised as it is still under statistical review, but it is scheduled to be ready for the 2020 European Championships. The president has even suggested it could be in place in time for the 2018 event in Berlin.
