Filip Ingebrigtsen: demoted brother Henrik to third
IT WAS no surprise that an Ingebrigtsen took gold, but it wasn’t 2012 champion Henrik but his younger brother Filip who won gold for Norway with a 51-second last lap.
Florian Cavalho led through 400m in a sluggish 63.49 and 800m in 2:10.43. Britain’s Jake Wightman, who had won his heat impressively in 3:39.32, was well placed and tried to overtake the Frenchman as they passed 1200m in 3:08.08.
With a strong kick, the Briton was in front 200 metres out and led into the straight, but it was too much too soon and he faded to a seventh-place finish, one spot behind fast-finishing Lee Emanuel, who made the final only because indoor champion Jakeb Holusa was disqualified.
