FUNDRAISING at the 2016 London Marathon reached an all-time high for the 10th successive year as thousands came together to raise a world record £59.4 million for charity on a single day.
The total improved on the 2015 record of £54.1 million and takes the grand total from when the event was founded in 1981 to more than £830 million.
London Marathon participation figures also set a new best as 39,140 runners crossed the finishing line along the Mall – a year which also saw the race’s millionth finisher.
Hugh Brasher, the London Marathon event director, said: “Every year the Virgin Money London Marathon inspires thousands of runners to take on the challenge of running the famous 26.2 miles and to raise record-breaking millions for charity.
