HE WAS the athlete the crowd came to see and Usain Bolt delivered with his expected victory. However, while his 19.89 200m was good and sent everyone home happy, he knows it won’t be good enough for victory in Rio and it wasn’t one of the best performances on a stunning opening night of athletics last Friday.
Last year at this meeting, Bolt won the 100m in 9.87 to signal his readiness for Beijing. This time he was running over the longer distance and getting back to competition after pulling out of the Jamaican Championships with a minor niggle. Had he been American of course, Bolt would not have qualified for Rio but, thankfully for the sport, the Jamaicans have a more forgiving system.
