1500m
NO ONE could live with Laura Muir’s closing pace as she whizzed through the final lap in 60 seconds and her last 300m in under 45 seconds. The Scottish athlete has established herself as the UK No.1 and stamped her authority on this race by cutting loose from her rivals in the closing stages.
Muir came close to breaking Zola Budd’s UK mile record in Oslo recently and she carried that form into Birmingham as she strode to gold in 4:10.14.
“It feels great – I just wanted to tick that box and seal my place on the team for Rio,” she said, after negotiating a final that is historically strewn with accidents. “I’ve retained my title at th same time so I am delighted. It was quite windy so I knew if I was going to win that I was going to have to make a break for it. It slowly wound up and I managed to break up the field.”
