400m
EMILY DIAMOND was a promising tennis player as a teenager who was good enough to have played in junior events at Wimbledon. So it was ironic that since switching to athletics she produced the run of her life the day before the big grand slam event was due to start at the All-England Club in London.
The 25-year-old was a tenacious baseline player who used her speed to get to the ball more consistently than her rivals, but she is now using that pace over 400m and on Sunday was an emphatic winner in 51.94.
“It’s just relief,” she said, “To win was just a massive bonus, and to firmly secure my seat at Rio is an absolute dream come true.”
