Sophie Hitchon: dominant in the hammer throw
WITH a victory margin of more than six metres, Sophie Hitchon produced one of the most emphatic performances of the weekend. A first-round effort of 69.99m effectively killed the contest as she secured gold with one perfectly-executed spin. “It’s always a proud moment to become a British champion,” said the 24-year-old. “I’ll look forward to the European Championships in a couple of weeks then we will be focusing on Rio.”
It was Hitchon’s third successive British title and she goes into her second Olympics keen to improve on a debut that saw her finish 12th.
Last year she broke the British record several times – with a best of 73.86m to finish fourth in the World Championships final – and feels the early part of this 2016 season is her best yet.
