IT’S AN UNSEASONABLY HOT October day in Philadelphia when I meet Shamir at his favourite coffee shop. As I arrive, he’s about to sit down at a table outside, armed with a huge iced coffee and a juice. I’d heard that the singer is shy and speaks in a voice low enough to induce panic in any journalist armed with any sort of recording device. And true enough I find myself leaning in to catch what he’s saying, sending a silent prayer to my dictaphone and wishing we’d chosen a nice quiet table inside.
